Application

The Copper Acorn Writer’s Post is a competitively selected, three-month residency that includes room and board. One writer is selected for the summer (June 1 - August 31), and one is chosen for the fall (October 1 - December 31). This gives writers the opportunity to concentrate on their craft by relieving them of need to pay for basic living expenses. The timeframe allows for substantial drafting, revision, networking, and job searching.

The Copper Acorn Writer’s Post provides an excellent environment in which to write. Our neighborhood is quiet, our home comfortable, and we supply healthy food. In the program’s first few years, the odds of being selected will be excellent.

In addition, this opportunity offers:

• Informal access to a writing group if the artist would like to share work
• Easy access to literary events in the robust Twin Cities literary community
• Proximity to small presses (Coffee House, Milkweed, and Graywolf) and a variety of magazines, businesses, and nonprofits to develop freelance prospects
• Informal mentorship with a successful writer and freelancer
• Time to develop or expand a social media platform as a professional writer

Application Process
The process is blind except for the finalists, who are required to provide recommendations and participate in an interview.

All applicants:

• 20 pages of writing
• Resume or CV

Top 30

• A brief questionnaire (10 short-answer questions)

Top 10

• One-page personal statement.
  • What would you like to accomplish in two months?
  • How can I help you accomplish those goals?

Top 3

• Three professional recommendations
• Background check

The only requirement for participant is to blog once a week on the Copper Acorn Writer’s Post Blog.

The application fee is $99, and submissions are due March 1, 2024.

• First 100 to apply receive a t-shirt.
• A feedback brief will be sent after final selections are made.
